Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel
Every winter, blocks of ice are lifted from the Torne River and a hotel goes up in Jukkasjärvi, well above the Arctic Circle. In spring it melts back into the same river.
Artists from many countries are invited to design individual art suites, so each season looks different from the last. Guests sleep in thermal sleeping bags on reindeer hides, with warm rooms nearby. A permanent building, cooled by solar power, keeps ice suites and an ice bar open through the summer too.
